If you happen to be having a lie-in on Sunday 29 January, spare a thought for Rob Lawley, an engineering consultant from Penrith who will be taking part in the Marrakesh Marathon to raise money for SPANA (Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad).
A family connection to the charity means that Rob is returning to Morocco for the first time in 30 years having visited it briefly while a student.
Rob’s brother-in-law, Michael Crane, is SPANA’s veterinary director in Morocco, overseeing the work at its 10 veterinary centres and helping to treat 110,000 animals each year, mainly donkeys and mules which local people are dependent on. Michael has been working in Morocco for over a year now and the marathon is also an excuse for his sister Liz (Rob’s wife) to visit him for the first time.
Rob is an experienced marathon competitor, having run five marathons in the last 4 years. He has completed the London marathon four times as well as the Blackpool marathon.
Rob said: “This will be the first marathon I’ve undertaken overseas and I’m really looking forward to it. We’ve heard a lot from Michael about the work he is doing out there so I shall be visiting the refuge in Marrakesh where they treat the animals.”
“SPANA does great work and I would appeal to anyone who wishes to sponsor me on this marathon to do so at my on-line sponsorship page www.justgiving.com/roblawley.”
