SPANA in the WALKS

29 November 2005

Everyone at SPANA likes a challenge and earlier this year we got one with a difference! A unique specialist travel company, Walks Worldwide, was looking for a charity with values which complemented its own and which would be able to benefit from a percentage of each booking on its range of tour programmes.  SPANA was selected as one of four shortlisted charities and we were set the task of telling Walks Worldwide why they should support us!  The first step was to do our research.

Walks Worldwide was founded seven years ago and offers a range of walking holidays to suit the needs of virtually anyone of any age.  Their website revealed a selection of walking holidays from Australia to the Arctic Circle and from the depths of the Dead Sea to the heights of Mount Toubkal in Morocco.   This was an obvious link with SPANA, since many of the mules which take the tourists’ luggage up into the Atlas mountains around Toubkal are cared for and treated by SPANA vets at a monthly clinic in the hill town of Imlil - so we knew that we were going to be able to make a good case!

We put together all the reasons why Walks Worldwide should support us, along with some copies of SPANA News and our annual report, and we crossed our fingers and held our breath!  At the end of May, an e-mail arrived back and we read the words.

“After much discussion ………. we have decided that SPANA would be a great charity for us to promote and support”!

From October 2005, Walks Worldwide will be

  • Donating £7.50 to SPANA for every person booking on any of its holidays. This is its way of showing support for the work we do in many of the countries in which Walks Worldwide organises walking tours.

  • Giving SPANA Supporters who book a Walks Worldwide holiday 7.5% discount on the standard price of the tour, and Walks Worldwide will donate a further 2.5% of the holiday price to SPANA.

  • Printing a wonderful feature on our work (written by SPANA patron John Craven OBE) to appear in the beautifully illustrated 2006 Walks Worldwide holiday brochure.

  • Including a leaflet about SPANA in the 2006 brochure which is being sent out to an 18,000 strong mailing list.

If you are interested in a holiday with Walks Worldwide (and you’ll be helping SPANA if you book one!) then you can call for a brochure on 01524 242000 or send an e-mail to sales@walksworldwide.com. The website is at www.walksworldwide.com.
