SPANA: Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad

Present outreach projects
in Africa

Ghana

SPANA is currently funding work in the Northern Regions of Ghana. We are aiming to provide free treatment for 1,300 working animals between April 2004 and 2006. We also hope to fund veterinary personnel, equipment and an educational programme.

Kenya

Regular droughts in Kenya make life very difficult for working donkeys and camels. In the Turkana district of northern Kenya, we are funding the construction of four rock catchment dams, to provide regular drinking water for working animals during the dry season. Each one will support 45,000 animals and the hundreds of families that rely on them for an income.

South Africa

In South Africa, we are working with the National Horse Trust to provide basic veterinary care for horses used by security companies to patrol railway lines. We also support the South African Cart Horse Protection Society, an organisation that cares for the horses that pull heavy loads in the poor townships of Cape Town. A recent appeal will help us to buy a vehicle for their technicians to use.

Sudan

In association with the Sudan Equestrian Federation, SPANA is funding a farriery training project in Khartoum. We hope to make poorly shod equines a thing of the past in Sudan.
