SPANA: Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad

Sudan

In October 2004 and February 2005, SPANA visited Sudan to assess the situation and find the best way of relieving the suffering of animals in IDP camps. In one of the camps we visited, we found that as many as 10,000 animals had already died of starvation. The livestock co-ordinator of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) told us that every Sudanese family needs at least two donkeys to survive through the annual dry season.

We established a huge stockpile of dried grass which was distributed every day to animal owners in the refugee camps. and this prevented more animals from starving. If you would like to help us with our emergency projects, please click here.

SPANA is helping animals that are vital to the survival of people affected by the conflict in Sudan..
