SPANA: Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad

Past outreach projects
in Africa

Gambia

SPANA funded a project run by Gambia's Horse and Donkey Trust to increase animal welfare knowledge in rural owners. A veterinary clinic was also built and now has a part-time vet to treat sick and injured working animals.

SPANA also funded the creation of Gambicats; a local animal protection society to neuter and vacccinate stray cats and dogs around local hotels on the coast.

Kenya

In association with the Kenya Network for Draught Animals, SPANA funded a one-year Donkey Radio initiative, resulting in the broadcast of a radio magazine programme aimed at animal owners and improving donkey welfare. The programmes relayed the message that it is not acceptable to mistreat animals. We hope this project has helped to change attitudes towards animals, and donkey welfare throughout the country.

Mozambique

SPANA's agreement with POWER and VETAID provided funding for the 'Donkability' project, in the Maputo Province. It helps disabled people to improve their standard of life by giving them access to donkeys and carts. We have already funded 10 carts, helping amputees make a living by transporting goods to market.

Swaziland

At the request of the Swaziland Animal Welfare Society, SPANA funded the building of 10 welfare kennels, as well as converting an existing building into a veterinary clinic.

Tanzania

SPANA funded a Donkey Welfare Improvement Project in rural Tanzania. We hoped to elevate the status of the donkey, so that they received better treatment from their owners and were able to lead a more productive working life.
