With your support we can give working animals and the people who depend on them a better future.

Some people think of SPANA as an animal charity that helps people. Others think we are a people charity that helps animals.

SPANA's CEO Jeremy Hulme and other staff members write from the front lines of our work, taking in everything from the Chelsea Flower show to the drought in Chad.

Mauritania

Stop the beating

Our recent campaign to stop the beating of donkeys as a method of steering was a huge success. Thanks to Andre Bubear, master saddler and harness maker, we trained locals in making simple and affordable head collars. Now drivers can steer their carts without having to resort to violence.

In Mauritania's capital, Nouakchott, a large proportion of the population have no mains water and rely on supplies delivered by donkey carts. The work is hard and every day donkeys pull water drums weighing up to a tonne.

Because of poverty, harnesses are often made from old tyres, plastic bags or iron chains. As a result animals suffer from painful sores and infections. We provide free treatment and show owners how to make the most of the materials they have to construct more comfortable harnesses.
