SPANA: Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad

Syria

Our base in Hama is situated in the Syrian Veterinary School of Al-Baath University and we are lucky enough to have several of the University's veterinary graduates working for us. Dr Abeer Zeit is just one of the vets who goes out with our mobile clinics. These medical units cover different parts of the country and travel up to 300km every day to treat sick and injured animals.

Syria has a diverse range of terrains, used for different types of farming, and our vets treat a wide variety of ailments as they travel around the country. Syria and Jordan are the only countries where SPANA doesn't visit souks (markets) but treats animals on farms. That's why our mobile vets have to travel such great distances visiting outlying villages to treat sick and injured animals.

In Tartous, SPANA was given the use of an old school by the Ministry of Education. We have converted this dusty, disused building into a fully functioning teacher training facility. Our 'teaching the teachers' projects will help to spread good husbandry and respect for animals throughout the countries in which we work.

For many rural communities working animals are essential to provide an income.
