SPANA: Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad

SPANA in Africa

Morocco

SPANA has been working in Morocco since 1925. We treat around 110,000 animals each year and hold daily clinics in our 10 veterinary centres. Our 10 mobile clinics visit local souks (markets) where large numbers of working animals congregate. We treat many types of animals from donkeys and horses to camels, dogs and cats.

Ethiopia

This is a country that has, in the past, been affected by famine, civil war and horrendous poverty. Working animals bear the brunt of the hardship and they are often forced to toil with painful and debilitating, yet treatable, medical conditions such as lameness and parasites. 2003 saw SPANA open its first mobile clinic to supplement the sterling work of our vet centre in Debre Zeit.

Mali

Although we only began our work here in 1996, SPANA has made a huge difference to the lives of thousands of Mali's working animals. From the rubbish dumps of the cities to the tribes in the North, we are passionate about improving conditions for any animal suffering poor treatment or neglect.

Mauritania

Mauritania is almost entirely desert. This is especially hard on working animals, who are forced to carry heavy loads for hours on end with very little natural forage. The SPANA clinic opened in 2001 and was clearly needed. Since then we have treated tens of thousands of sick sick and exhausted equines. The massive demand has meant we have now built more stables to help improve horse and donkey welfare.

Tunisia

SPANA has been working in Tunisia since 1925 and our 3 veterinary centres and 4 mobile units are always busy. We treat around 12,000 working animals each year, including many camels working in the bustling tourist industry.

Algeria

The SPANA refuge at Touggourt is one of our oldest and although Algeria is politically unsettled, we still manage to treat over 5,000 animals every year. We are able to get aid to our dedicated staff through neighbouring Tunisia.
