Kenya
In February 2006, SPANA funded a feeding programme for the thousands of animals affected by an ongoing drought in East Africa. 70% of livestock and 90% of donkeys had died of starvation in an area where people are dependent on their animals for a living.
Many parts of the region had no rain for 16 months and there was no feed for animals. SPANA was able to supply and distribute fodder via the UK on-the-ground charity Practical Action.

Outreach projects
We provided the funding of the construction of four rock catchment dams, which provide regular drinking water for working animals during the dry season. Each one will support 45,000 animals and the hundreds of families that rely on them.
And, in association with the Kenya Network for Draught Animals, SPANA also funded a one-year Donkey Radio initiative. The programmes sent the message that it is not acceptable to mistreat animals. We hope this project has helped to change attitudes towards animals throughout the country.
