Countries
Our work takes us to the world’s poorest communities, where people would struggle to survive without their animals.
SPANA ensures that donkeys, horses and mules are healthy and people aware of the importance of animal welfare in over 30 countries.
SPANA’s main centres:
Morocco
SPANA has been working in Morocco since 1925, where we treat around 110,000 animals each year.
Mali
SPANA has been working in Mali since 1996, making a huge difference to the lives of thousands of working animals – from the rubbish dump donkeys of the cities to the camels of the tribes in the North.
Mauritania
Our clinic opened in 2001 and the huge demand for its services shows that it was desperately needed.
Tunisia
We have been working in Tunisia since 1925 and our three veterinary centres and three mobile clinics treat around 12,000 working animals each year, including many camels.
Syria
Our three mobile clinics travel up to 300km every day to treat sick and injured animals.
Ethiopia
SPANA’s two mobile clinics support the busy veterinary clinic in Debre Zeit. Scarred by food crisis, civil war and horrendous poverty, Ethiopia’s 2.75 million horses and many donkeys are often sick, injured and overworked.
Jordan
Our clinic opened in 2001 and the huge demand for its services shows that it was desperately needed.
Algeria
Established in 1924, SPANA’s veterinary clinic at Touggourt is one of our oldest.
Emergency projects:
Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe is a country in chaos, but we are able to help through our emergency initiatives.
Chad
The conflict in Sudan has forced more than 400,000 people to flee their homes into neighbouring Chad. Many have lost everything and are now struggling to survive in overcrowded refugee camps. Their only hope for the future lies with their animals.
Sudan
In Sudan, thousands of refugees are struggling to find enough food for their children, let alone their donkeys or horses.
Kenya
In February 2006, SPANA funded a feeding programme for the thousands of animals affected by an ongoing drought in East Africa. 70% of livestock and 90% of donkeys had died of starvation in an area where people are dependent on their animals for a living.
Iraq
At its peak, Iraq’s conflict meant that many Iraqi farmers struggled to keep their horses and donkeys alive.
Kosovo
Following a request for assistance, a SPANA veterinary team was sent to Kosovo shortly after British troops arrived in the capital.
Outreach programmes:
China
Despite the recent impressive development in China, many rural communities still depend on their working animals. Most households in the villages own at least one donkey, which is used to cultivate fields, transport water and carry products to and from market.
Gambia
SPANA funded a project run by Gambia's Horse and Donkey Trust to increase knowledge about animal welfare in rural owners. A veterinary clinic was also built, which now has a part-time vet.
Europe and Asia
We have been funding projects in Albania, Romania, Armenia, Turkey, India, Mongolia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Taiwan.
South Africa
We are working with the National Horse Trust to provide basic veterinary care for horses used by security companies to patrol railway lines.
Ghana
SPANA is funding work in the Northern Regions of Ghana to provide free treatment, veterinary personnel, equipment and an educational programme.
Mozambique
SPANA's agreement with POWER and VETAID financed the 'Donkability' project, in the Maputo Province.
Central and South America
SPANA funds projects in El Salvador, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, and Peru.
