How you can help stop animals going blind.

By giving a donation to SPANA today you could prevent a donkey, mule or horse from losing their sight.

I’m sure that – like us – you’d do anything to stop yourself going blind. That’s because our eyes are so important to us. Sight is vital for animals too.

As our new Chairman, Professor Derek Knottenbelt explains, “The loss of an eye for an equine in the places SPANA works can be seriously limiting and the loss of both would mean certain death.”

Bay, the mule pictured to the right, had an eye infection that was robbing him of his sight. He was unable to see the potholes and boulders that lay in his path and sure enough, one day he slipped and fell. As his legs folded beneath him he suffered deep cuts to his knees.

Thankfully, his owner brought him straight to us.

After treating his knees a thorough health check was given and our vets discovered the infection that was affecting his vision and causing him pain. Bay’s eye was carefully cleaned. He was given painkillers and antibiotics and his eye was bandaged to protect it from further damage. This timely treatment saved Bay’s sight.

Eye injuries and infections in equines are common. Especially in the places where SPANA works. But if treated quickly their vision can usually be saved.
