SPANA: Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad

Veterinary programme

SPANA's veterinary centres are essential not only because they offer free treatment, but also in demonstrating to owners and local practitioners the benefits of proper animal care. For example, our clinics in Tunisia have their own stables, where local farriers can learn more humane ways of shoeing horses and donkeys.

Our mobile clinics are responsible for treating around 90% of the animals we see and service some of the most remote communities. Often these are incredibly impoverished areas and other veterinary services are non-existent. If our mobile vets did not travel up to 300 kilometres every day, these animals would go without the treatment they desperately need.

By working with local owners we can develop their understanding of general animal healthcare and, in turn, they share this knowledge amongst the wider community. For example, in Northern Mali, we treated the animals of local herdsmen, then trained some of them as Community Animal Health Workers. They are now able to vaccinate and worm animals and treat simple medical conditions for local livestock owners.

SPANA is passionately committed to training our vet teams and providing ongoing professional instruction to improve their skills. We regularly invite veterinary specialists from the UK and Europe to lead seminars on a range of subjects from equine dentistry to foot care.

By supporting SPANA, you will help us finance more projects like these and build a future free from unnecessary suffering for working animals.
