Our Important Breakthrough In Botswana
Every day, our fledgling SPANA veterinary team in Botswana treat donkeys facing grim, life-or-death situations. The foundations are now in place to make a great change in Botswana, but we can only go so far on our own. That’s why we are calling on kind supporters like you, to help us advance this breakthrough even further for donkeys in need:
Tightly hobbled and almost strangled, there’s no time to lose…
Pippa, the team’s coordinator, noticed two frail, working animals moving awkwardly in the distance. On closer inspection, she found their feet were bound so tightly that their hooves were touching. Worse still, a knotted rope was pulled taut around their necks, almost strangling them.
If one of them had fallen or twisted round, the two donkeys could have easily choked each other to death. Pippa immediately released the two donkeys from their neck ties and treated their sores and injuries. Thanks to the rapid intervention of the veterinary team every day, many donkeys are rescued from excruciating, potentially disabling injuries. It can even save their lives.
Speeding cars, predators... it’s not just illness that threatens the lives of vulnerable donkeys
Without a corral to protect them, working donkeys can be killed by predators and speeding cars. When Pippa, the SPANA team’s vet technician, wanted to re-examine one injured donkey that she’d treated recently, it was too late. It had been killed by a hyena in the night. Building a secure corral with a gum pole structure and canvas shade could help save animals’ lives. It would be a place of safety for many donkeys: a sanctuary where they would find food, water and rest.
Will you be part of this important breakthrough for the working donkeys of Botswana?
This is an exciting new journey: a chance to reach even more working donkeys in pain and distress and an opportunity to sow the seeds of change in Botswana. Your support is crucial in transforming the lives of working donkeys, so please give whatever you can today.
£10 or whatever you can give to help us build a protective corral
It will cost SPANA £680 to build a protective corral - can you contribute towards this and help keep the donkeys of Botswana safe at night? By funding the building costs, and equipping it with water troughs and nutritious food, you could save the life of a vulnerable working animal.
£18 could help pay for a mobile IV drip that could save a donkey’s life
Developed by a SPANA vet technician in Morocco, the innovative IV drip pictured overleaf sits neatly on the back of a sick or injured donkey. With your support we can equip our team with these custom-made IV drips in Botswana, saving even more animals’ lives in remote areas.
£29 could pay for 10 pairs of humane hobbles that don’t cause donkeys pain and distress
Known as ‘hobbling’, it’s common for owners to tie their donkeys’ front legs together to stop them straying. By providing owners with special hobbles made of soft, cotton webbing, you could help prevent terrible pain and distress.
